And, Acrylics…

Acrylics. Fast drying, malleable, adaptable. From watercolour- like washes, to full ‘impasto’, thickly textured paint surfaces, and everything in between, acrylic is a fabulous medium for the artist to work in.

With the vagaries of the English weather, acrylics are often a first choice for the field, due to their fast drying qualities. However, rain stops play completely due to the solubility of the still-wet paint.

In the studio, the fast drying of the medium can be used to great advantage, allowing wonderful impasto effects. Almost three dimensional, they add an element of texture to the painting that often seems to make it jump off the canvas. The small study of the medicine bottle ‘The Magic Potion’, was completed using a painters palette knife. The impasto provides a fresh, spontaneous look, allowing the painter to be bold in its use, and, leaving in the strokes, and, curves of the creative process.
